Lot 2a: Edwardian Inlaid Mahogany Balloon Mantel Clock

Live auction will start in __ days and __ hours

Start price: £2

Buyer's Premium:

A French-made Edwardian-period mantel clock housed in a mahogany balloon-shaped case, reflecting the Sheraton Revival style popular in the early 20th century. The case is decorated with boxwood stringing and a central inlaid marquetry patera in the form of a sunburst motif. It stands on a stepped rectangular plinth base with a vertical wood grain. The circular dial features an engine-turned (guilloché) sunburst pattern emanating from the centre, protected by a convex glass lens and a polished brass bezel. The dial is printed with black Arabic numerals and features steel spade-style hands. A printed mark at the base of the dial below the numeral 6 reads MADE IN FRANCE. The clock uses a mechanical movement, likely an 8-day time-only mechanism, wound from the rear as there are no winding apertures present on the dial face.

Condition report:

The mahogany case shows minor surface wear and small nicks consistent with age, notably along the edges of the stepped base (photo 1). The brass bezel displays areas of oxidation and tarnishing around the perimeter (photo 1). The engine-turned dial remains clean with no significant fading to the numerals, and the glass lens is intact and free of cracks. The hands are set at approximately 12:01; however, the movement is untested and the working status is unknown.
