Lot 2: A Wooden Trinket Box Featuring Beatrix Potter Illustrations
A wooden trinket box finished in a yellow-toned wash, featuring decoupage or printed illustrations after the watercolours of Beatrix Potter. The hinged lid depicts scenes from The Tale of Jemima Puddle-Duck, showing the title character in her signature blue shawl and bonnet meeting a fox, with a small blue bird perched in the tree above. The front side panel shows Jemima Puddle-Duck with a brood of ducklings near a farmhouse interior featuring a dresser and barrel. The box is constructed with two brass-toned butt hinges and is lined throughout the interior with dark green velvet. A small orange adhesive rectangular price sticker is present on the upper left corner of the lid, but the digits are not legible. No maker’s name, brand label, or country-of-origin marks are visible on the interior or exterior surfaces.
Condition report:
The exterior finish shows significant age-related wear, including widespread craquelure and yellowing of the protective varnish across the lid and side panels (photo 1). There is visible paint loss and rubbing to the wood along the edges and corners of the lid and base (photo 1). The interior green velvet lining is intact but shows a light accumulation of dust and lint (photo 2). The hinges appear functional, though they show some surface patination consistent with age (photo 2).
