Lot 293: A Collection of Framed Black and White Topographical and Maritime Photographic Prints
A collection of framed photographic prints and postcards, primarily featuring English Lake District topography and maritime subjects. The group includes several black and white and sepia-toned images, with some presented in oval mounts. Notable subjects include the steam yacht “Gondola” on Coniston Water, with printed captions reading “S.Y. ‘GONDOLA’ ON CONISTON LAKE” and “S.Y. ‘GONDOLA’ & LADY AT WATERHEAD PIER”. Another print depicts a street scene featuring a building with signs reading “DOLPHIN” and “K. THOMPSON & …”. The prints appear to be a mix of silver gelatin processes and early 20th-century lithographic postcard prints. The collection is housed in various wooden frames, including dark-stained and composite designs, some featuring gilt-finish inner slips. Several frames are equipped with small metal hanging tabs or clips at the top edges. Handwritten notations are visible in the margins of some mounts, including names and location details.
Condition report:
The collection shows signs of age and varying storage conditions. Several prints are mounted upside down within their frames (photo 1). There is visible dust and grime accumulation on the glass and frame surfaces. Fading and yellowing consistent with age are present across the paper mounts and photographic prints. Small metal hanging tabs show signs of oxidation or surface wear. Some frames exhibit minor scuffs and losses to the finish.
