Lot 292: A Pair of Framed Artworks Comprising a Coastal Landscape Print and a Portrait Photograph
A pair of framed artworks featuring diverse subject matter and framing styles. The first piece is a landscape print on paper depicting a coastal scene. The composition features wind-bent pine trees in the foreground overlooking a body of water with mountains visible in the distance, executed in a style characteristic of early 20th-century graphic art. It is housed in a simple, stained wood frame with a mitred construction. The second piece is a portrait photograph of a young woman, presented in a vignetted style common to early 20th-century studio photography. The photograph is set within a wide, cream-coloured mount and housed in a substantial dark oak frame. The frame features elaborate relief carving including a repeating arched pattern and a geometric basket-weave design along the lower edge. An orange adhesive label with the number 292 is applied to the upper left of the landscape frame and the upper left of the portrait frame. A white adhesive label with the number 9 is applied to the upper right of the landscape glass and the lower left of the portrait mount. No artist signatures or inscriptions are visible on either work.
Condition report:
Both items exhibit signs of age and wear consistent with their period. The landscape print shows a horizontal band of light reflection across the lower third, though the paper support appears stable (photo 1). The portrait photograph shows significant yellowing to the mount and light foxing or discolouration to the photographic paper (photo 1). The carved oak frame shows surface dust and minor scuffs to the wood finish, particularly along the raised edges of the carving (photo 1). The wood frame of the landscape shows light abrasions and surface wear to the stain (photo 1).
