A group of framed items of local historical interest, featuring a documented maritime incident at Lake Windermere. The primary display consists of a printed newspaper clipping and a manuscript property list, both relating to a storm in September 1884. The printed section is headed TWO LOST IN TEMPEST and details an account from Bowness-on-Windermere, dated September 13, 1884, mentioning Messrs Lloyds of London Marine Underwriters. Accompanying this is a handwritten list titled List of property lost in rowing boat during recent tempest in the Lake Windermere, belonging to JOHN CAMPBELL, Yacht & Boat Proprietor. The list includes 1 Rowing boat, 4 Rods & lines, 1 Can of worms, and 1 Anchor, with a final valuation of £11. 9. 8.
The collection also includes a black and white silver gelatin print depicting a traditional Lakeland stone building with multiple gables and climbing foliage, typical of the architecture in the Bowness area. The items are presented in matching contemporary stained wood frames with gold-tone inner fillets and dark brown mounts. A white adhesive label on the frame of the ephemera piece bears the number 8 8, and a similar label on an adjacent frame shows the number 8.
Condition report:
The newspaper clipping and manuscript list show overall yellowing, toning, and scattered foxing consistent with late 19th-century newsprint and paper (photo 1). The frames exhibit minor surface scuffing and dust accumulation to the wood and glazing (photo 1). The silver gelatin photograph retains good tonal contrast with no visible silver mirroring or physical damage to the print surface as seen through the glass (photo 1). The frames appear structurally sound.
