Lot 23: A Collection of Silver-Plated Tea and Coffee Service Vessels

Live auction will start in __ days and __ hours

Start price: £2

Buyer's Premium:

A collection of six silver-plated holloware vessels, comprising two lidded pots, two double-handled open vessels, and two single-handled jugs. Each piece is constructed with a cylindrical body and simple C-scroll handles, characteristic of mid-20th-century commercial or hotel-ware design. The lidded pots feature hinged covers with spherical finials and curved spouts. The open vessels are fitted with two handles, and the smaller jugs are equipped with a single handle and a pinched pouring spout.

The items are finished in a reflective silver plate. A group of three or four small, impressed marks in rectangular cartouches is visible on the lower body or base of the vessels; however, the characters within these marks are not legible and do not spell out a maker’s name. An orange adhesive price sticker is present on the lid of one pot, and a white adhesive label with the handwritten number 25 is present on the lid of the second pot. The interiors of the vessels reveal a yellow-toned base metal, suggesting the silver is plated over brass or nickel silver.

Condition report:

The collection shows extensive wear to the silver plating, with the base metal visible on the interiors of all open vessels and along the rims and high points of the handles and spouts (all photos). There is significant tarnish and oxidation throughout the set, particularly on the interiors and around the hinges and handle joins. Surface scuffs and scratches consistent with commercial use are visible on the polished exteriors. The orange and white adhesive labels on the lids are later additions.
