Lot 213: Two Boxed Sets of Pimpernel Traditional Place Mats Featuring Goldcrest Birds and The Sloop Inn St Ives
A collection of two sets of traditional hardboard placemats manufactured by Pimpernel, each featuring a cork backing and heat-resistant laminated surface. The first set, titled Goldcrest, displays an illustration of three Goldcrest birds (Regulus regulus) perched on a coniferous branch, with the artwork signed with the initials EB. The interior white plastic divider of the box is printed with a logo of a stylized flower inside a square and the text Pimpernel TRADITIONAL PLACE MATS 5 5. The mat itself is labeled Goldcrest REGULUS REGULUS in script and block lettering. The second set features a landscape painting of The Sloop Inn in St Ives, Cornwall, showing the historic white-walled pub with figures and a sign reading The Sloop Inn. The bottom right of the image contains the handwritten text The Sloop St Ives, Cornwall, and the artwork is signed in the upper right, although the signature is not clearly legible. An orange adhesive price label reading 213 is present on the top mat of the St Ives set. Both sets are contained within their original cardboard presentation boxes.
Condition report:
Both sets appear to be in good vintage condition. The Goldcrest mats appear unused (photo 1). The interior plastic dividers of the Goldcrest box show some yellowing and discoloration due to age (photo 1). The Sloop Inn mats show minor shelf wear and slight edge rubbing to the laminated surface of the top mat (photo 1). The cardboard boxes show typical signs of storage wear, including minor scuffing and softening of the corners (photo 1).
