Lot 305: A Pair of Joseph Kirkpatrick (British, 1872-1936) 'Coastal Quay' and 'Village Hillside' (Signed)
A pair of watercolours on paper by Joseph Kirkpatrick. The first artwork depicts a coastal or riverside topographical scene with stone buildings situated along a quay and a boat in the foreground. The second artwork shows a row of traditional buildings along a rising hillside path. Both pieces are executed in a realist style characteristic of late 19th and early 20th-century British landscape painting. The first work is signed J. Kirkpatrick in the lower right corner. Both artworks are presented in matching gilt frames with broad gold-toned mats.
Condition report:
Fair to poor. Both watercolours show prominent and widespread foxing and staining to the paper support. The matting of the coastal scene has several significant tears and creases, particularly to the upper and left edges. Both frames show visible losses and chipping to the gilt finish. Orange adhesive labels are present on the front of both mats.
