Lot 306: H. Anwar, A Pair of Watercolours of Balinese Life
A pair of watercolours on paper by the artist H. Anwar, depicting traditional scenes of Balinese life. The first work illustrates a group of figures wearing traditional conical hats, engaged in agricultural work within a flooded rice paddy landscape. The second work portrays a cockfighting scene, featuring two roosters in combat observed by two male figures. Both pieces are executed in a gestural, calligraphic style characteristic of mid-20th-century Southeast Asian art. The cockfighting scene is signed H. Anwar in the lower right corner. The rice paddy scene features a stylized mark in the upper right corner. Both works are presented in matching dark green mounts within gilt-finish wooden frames and are glazed. Small orange adhesive lot tags marked 306 are attached to the upper left corner of each frame.
Condition report:
Both works show overall toning and yellowing to the paper, consistent with age. The frames exhibit minor surface scuffs and areas of gilt loss. There is an accumulation of dust and light surface grime on the glazing. The adhesive lot tags remain present on the frames. Internal matting has not been inspected out of the frames for potential mat burn or foxing.
