A hand-held signal lantern, constructed from sheet steel with remains of a red painted finish. The rectangular lamp features a large dark bullseye lens set within a recessed housing and is fitted with a curved metal handle. This design is characteristic of signalling equipment used by British Railways and for roadworks during the mid-20th century, often attributed to makers such as Chalwyn. No maker’s marks or inscriptions are visible on the exterior surfaces.
Condition report:
The lamp exhibits a heavily weathered state with extensive surface rust and pitting across all metal components. The original paint is significantly degraded and largely lost. The glass lens is present but appears dark and clouded. Internal components, including the burner, are missing or not visible.
