A pair of oil on canvas board paintings depicting floral still life compositions, primarily featuring clusters of white and blush-toned roses set against dark, atmospheric backgrounds. The works are executed in a traditional decorative style, characterised by heavy impasto brushwork on the flower petals and soft, wet-in-wet blending in the foliage and backgrounds. Both paintings are signed J. Cooper vertically on the right-hand side of the composition. Each painting is housed in a matching ornate oval frame with a gilded and dark-stained finish, featuring beaded inner borders and scrolled outer edges. The reverse of the frames includes small auction lot stickers numbered 22 and 297.
Condition report:
The paintings are in good overall condition. Light surface dust is present across the canvas and frame surfaces. The frames exhibit minor wear and small scuffs to the gilded finish, particularly along the outer edges, consistent with age and handling. The canvas boards appear stable within their frames.
