Lot 298: A Pair of 20th Century Dutch Style Still Life Oil Paintings
A pair of oil on canvas paintings executed in the 20th century, presented in a decorative style inspired by 17th-century Dutch pronkstilleven still life painting. One composition features an ornate high-relief gilt ewer as the focal point, surrounded by peaches, green grapes, and a small glass goblet against a dark, tonal background with draped fabric. The companion piece depicts a gilt compote with a sliced melon, red grapes, and peaches. Both works utilize dramatic chiaroscuro lighting and textured brushwork, with impasto highlights applied to the metallic and fruit surfaces to enhance depth and reflectivity. No signature or date is clearly legible on the face of either painting. The works are housed in substantial and matching ornate gilt-finished composite frames characterised by scrolled foliate and shell motifs at the corners and centres, complemented by an inner cream fabric-covered slip. Auction lot stickers 298 and 22 are adhered to the frames.
Condition report:
The paintings appear to be in good overall condition with some light surface dust. The canvas supports remain stable and taut within the frames. The frames show typical light wear, including minor losses to the gilding and small abrasions to the composite mouldings consistent with age and handling. The fabric slips exhibit minor discolouration and dust accumulation.
