March timed auction

Lot 519: A Late 19th Century British Industrial Heavy-Duty Forged Steel and Hardwood Cutter

The auction will start in __ days and __ hours

Start price: £2

Buyer's Premium:

This large industrial or trade cutter is designed for heavy-duty manual use, likely for processing sugar loaves, tobacco, or rope. The tool features a forged iron or steel cutting head with a curved blade, joined to long handles via brass ferrules. The handles are constructed from a dark hardwood, possibly mahogany or rosewood, and are secured with multiple brass pins. The construction methods and materials are characteristic of British commercial tools from the Victorian or Edwardian periods. Small, worn stamped marks are present on the brass ferrules but are not legible. A white auction lot sticker numbered 29 29 is adhered to one handle.

Condition report:

The item is in fair antique condition with significant signs of historical use. The metalwork displays heavy surface oxidation, pitting, and a dark patina throughout. The wooden handles have a well-developed patina with various scuffs, scratches, and minor indentations consistent with age. The tool appears complete with its original pivot pin and handle rivets. The mechanical action is functional, though the blade edge shows wear and would require sharpening and cleaning if intended for use.
