A traditional Scottish Highland brooch featuring the taxidermy foot of a Red Grouse (Lagopus lagopus scotica). The specimen retains mottled brown and cream feathers and three dark claws. The foot is mounted with white metal fittings, including an engraved terminal cap decorated with foliate and thistle motifs. The cap is set with a faceted orange-coloured stone, likely citrine or paste. A second matching faceted stone is secured in a claw setting on the front of the leg. The reverse features a pin mechanism for attachment. This style of jewellery was common in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, often worn as part of Highland dress or as a hunting trophy.
Condition report:
The specimen is in good overall condition. The feathers remain well-preserved and intact. The claws are undamaged. The white metal mounts show minor surface tarnishing and light wear consistent with age. The faceted stones appear secure in their settings.
