A recording meteorological instrument, specifically a barograph, manufactured by T. Armstrong & Bro. of Manchester. The instrument is housed in a dark-stained mahogany case featuring a glazed viewing panel to the front and a fine wire mesh panel to the left side to allow for airflow. A rectangular brass plate is fixed to the wooden frame, engraved with the text T. ARMSTRONG & BRO., 88 & 90 DEANSGATE, – MANCHESTER -. The interior contains a clockwork-driven recording drum fitted with a paper chart. The chart displays a printed grid with vertical numerical scales including 10, 20, 30, and 40. A horizontal metal pen arm is positioned to record data onto the rotating drum. Internal components are constructed primarily from brass.
Condition report:
The instrument appears to be largely complete with the recording arm and chart drum in situ. The glass panel is intact but exhibits surface dust and minor spotting. The wooden case shows light wear and a natural patina consistent with age and professional use. The mechanical clockwork function and calibration have not been tested.
