Lot 311: A Collection of Late 19th and Early 20th Century Magic Lantern Slides Including Topographical and Religious Subjects
This collection comprises an assortment of magic lantern slides dating from circa 1890 to 1920. The slides are composed of glass plates, some featuring printed or handwritten labels. The subject matter includes religious and moralistic illustrations, hymn lyrics, and topographical views. One slide illustrates a scene related to the hymn Rescuing the Perishing with the title handwritten in white ink. Another slide contains the full text of a hymn, and a third is labelled for Canterbury. Visible markings include a printed label for H. M. Foster on a slide frame, small circular labels numbered 56, and a handwritten number 160 on a text slide. The slides are contained within a decorative metal storage tin with a hinged lid.
Condition report:
The slides show signs of age-related wear including surface dust and minor foxing to the emulsion. One slide displays a significant crack and chip to the glass in the lower-left corner. The metal tin shows significant wear with surface oxidation, scratches, and loss to the original painted decoration, particularly on the lid and edges.
