Lot 508: A Pair of 19th Century English Carved Stone Staddle Stones

Live auction will start in __ days and __ hours

Start price: £2

Buyer's Premium:

A pair of carved stone staddle stones, characteristic of 19th-century English garden or architectural ornaments. Each piece is constructed in two parts, featuring a tapered square-section base and a circular cap with a slightly recessed top. The items are carved from natural stone, likely limestone or gritstone. Historically, these stones served as supporting pillars for granaries and haystacks to protect stored crops from rodents. Small orange circular adhesive stickers are located on the top centre of each cap. No maker’s marks or signatures are present.

Condition report:

Both stones exhibit extensive weathering and signs of age. There is significant accumulation of moss and lichen growth across all surfaces. The stone is pitted with naturally worn and irregular edges resulting from long-term outdoor exposure.
