Lot 445: Mid-20th Century Burmese Lacquerware Octagonal Folding Side Table
A mid-20th century Burmese incised lacquerware Hware occasional folding side table. The piece is constructed from lacquered wood. The octagonal top features intricate incised and pigment-filled decoration in orange and green tones on a black ground. The design includes a central medallion depicting a mythical Hintha bird, surrounded by eight circular medallions containing animals representing the Burmese zodiac. These are framed by concentric bands of scrolling foliage and geometric patterns. The conforming octagonal base consists of hinged panels decorated with matching lacquer-work depicting birds and foliate motifs. No maker marks are visible on the top or the side of the piece. A yellow auction lot sticker is present on the top reading 445.
Condition report:
The table is in fair to poor condition. There is significant impact damage and a large loss of lacquer to one edge of the octagonal top, exposing the underlying material. The top and base show general surface wear, including scratches, scuffs, and minor chipping to the lacquer, particularly along the edges and hinges. The item requires professional restoration.
