Lot 214: A mid-to-late 20th-century latch hook rug with stylized floral design
A decorative latch hook rug dating from the mid-to-late 20th century, featuring a large-scale stylized floral composition. The design is centred around a multi-petalled flower in shades of green, surrounded by foliate motifs in off-white, dark brown, and rust orange, all set against a vibrant ochre yellow ground. The composition is partially enclosed by a curved, patterned border in complementary colours. The rug is constructed from coarse yarn, possibly a wool and synthetic blend, worked onto a mesh canvas backing. This item is characteristic of domestic rug-making kits popular during the period, such as those produced by Shillcraft. No maker’s marks or signatures are present; a small orange adhesive tag with hand-written characters 214 is present on the surface.
