Lot 466: Rococo Revival Style Gilt Metal and Onyx Oval Coffee Table
A Rococo Revival style coffee table featuring an oval top crafted from a single slab of banded onyx. The stone presents a palette of translucent white and pale green with natural rust-red and orange veining throughout. The top is supported by a cast metal frame with a gilt finish. The base includes an ornate, pierced gallery apron decorated with a repeating scrolled motif. It is supported by two baluster-form pedestals, each terminating in a scrolled four-point trestle base. The pedestals are joined by a decoratively shaped horizontal stretcher. The metalwork displays classical ornamentation including acanthus leaves and geometric frieze details. The onyx top is loose-laid into the metal frame. No maker’s marks, signatures, or labels are visible on the item.
Condition report:
The onyx top shows surface scratches and abrasions consistent with use, visible across the polished surface (photo 2). The gilt finish on the cast metal base displays wear and tarnish, particularly concentrated on the lower sections of the trestle legs and the central stretcher (photo 1). There is a small orange circular mark on the surface of the stone near one edge (photo 1). Visible seams and joins from the casting process are present in the metalwork.
