Lot 80: A Pair of Japanese Satsuma Earthenware Vases

Live auction will start in __ days and __ hours

Start price: £2

Buyer's Premium:

A pair of Japanese Satsuma earthenware vases, likely dating from the Meiji to Taisho period. These ovoid-form vases are constructed from cream-coloured earthenware featuring a characteristic fine crackle glaze. The decoration is executed in polychrome enamels and raised moriage gilding, typical of the Satsuma style. The decorative scheme is organised into various shaped reserves and cartouches containing a variety of motifs. One vase depicts a figurative scene with two individuals in traditional Japanese dress, including one wearing a patterned robe and a dark headpiece. The surrounding areas are filled with stylized floral patterns, geometric designs, and diaper motifs. The necks are decorated with a repeating band of white and orange dots against a brown ground. Two adhesive labels are present on one vase: an orange rectangular sticker reading 80 and a white rectangular label reading 18 18. No maker marks or signatures are visible as the bases are not shown.

Condition report:

The vases show significant signs of damage and wear. The vase in the foreground has a large chip and a visible vertical crack resulting in a missing portion of the rim (photo 1). Crazing is present throughout the cream glaze on both pieces, which is a characteristic feature of this earthenware type (photo 1). There is visible rubbing and wear to the gilded highlights and painted enamels, particularly on the raised moriage sections (photo 1). Surface grime and shelf wear are evident on the bodies of both vases (photo 1).
