Live auction will start in __ days and __ hours

Start price: £2

Buyer's Premium:

A French Model 1874 bayonet, designed for use with the Fusil Gras M80 bolt-action rifle. This edged weapon features a distinctive T-section steel blade, intended for thrusting rather than cutting. The hilt construction incorporates a forged steel crossguard with a forward-swept hooked quillon and an integrated muzzle ring. The grip is composed of two wooden scales secured to the tang by two steel rivets. The hilt is finished with a contoured brass pommel which houses the T-shaped attachment slot and a steel spring-loaded press-stud mechanism. The spine of the blade bears an engraved inscription, though the characters are heavily obscured by oxidation and are not legible. Stamped marks are present on the steel crossguard but are similarly obscured by corrosion.

Condition report:

The bayonet is in relic condition with significant surface deterioration. The steel blade, crossguard, and press-stud exhibit widespread heavy oxidation, thick rust, and pitting (photo 1). The brass pommel shows significant tarnish and areas of green verdigris (photo 1). The wooden grip scales are darkened with age and display multiple surface abrasions, small indentations, and staining. The spring-loaded attachment mechanism appears to be seized due to internal corrosion. The original steel scabbard is missing.
