Lot 451: Large Ornate Gilt Framed Rectangular Wall Mirror
A large rectangular wall mirror featuring an ornate neoclassical style molded frame. The frame is finished in a bright gold tone and is decorated with multiple courses of repeating motifs, including a gadrooned inner border, a beaded or pearl course, and a wide outer margin of scrolling acanthus leaves and floral designs. The construction appears to be molded plaster or resin applied over a wooden base. The mirror plate is flat and set deep within the frame. Two white rectangular adhesive labels are present on the surface of the glass, one at the upper right and one at the lower right; however, the text on these labels is not legible at the current resolution. The reverse of the mirror is not visible, and no maker’s name or country of origin is readable on the object.
Condition report:
The frame shows minor surface dust throughout and potential light rubbing to the gilded finish on the high points of the molded decoration (photo 1). The mirror plate displays significant surface spotting, streaks, and white speckles across much of the surface, particularly visible on the left side, which may indicate either heavy surface soiling or early stages of silvering degradation known as foxing (photo 1). No cracks or chips are visible to the glass or the frame.
