Lot 435: A Group of Four Salt-Glazed Stoneware Drainage Pipes

Live auction will start in __ days and __ hours

Start price: £2

Buyer's Premium:

A group of cylindrical industrial stoneware pipes, likely intended for drainage or architectural use. Each piece is constructed with thick walls and features a salt-glazed finish in varied shades of earthy orange and brown. Two sections are formed with a socketed or flared terminal at one end, allowing for a spigot-and-socket connection when laid in a series. The rims exhibit a coarse, unglazed texture where the clay body is exposed. The interior surfaces show a dark, glassy glaze application. An orange adhesive label is present on the rim of one pipe, bearing the handwritten characters 435.

Condition report:

The collection shows signs of significant age and previous utility (photo 1). There is surface wear, minor chipping, and abrasion consistent with industrial salvage. One pipe displays heavy dark staining and soot-like residue on both the interior and exterior surfaces (top right, photo 1). There are firing irregularities, surface pitting, and glaze variations throughout the group. No large structural cracks are visible from the primary angle.
