Lot 416: Two Matchstick Scale Models of a Bow-top Gypsy Caravan and a Multi-gabled Tavern

Live auction will start in __ days and __ hours

Start price: £2

Buyer's Premium:

A pair of handcrafted architectural and transportation scale models constructed primarily from wooden matchsticks. The first model represents a traditional bow-top gypsy caravan or vardo. The exterior is fashioned from vertical matchstick slats, topped with a curved roof featuring a woven basketry texture. The caravan is decorated with four rectangular wooden panels: two depicting red roses and two depicting horses within a landscape. The chassis includes four spoked wooden wheels, a removable wooden ladder, and a front hitch assembly. A small blue and white striped barrel is mounted at the rear.

The second model is a large, multi-gabled building, likely representing a tavern or inn. The structure is built from matchsticks laid in alternating horizontal and vertical patterns to create textured walls and tiered roof sections. The roofs are further decorated with rows of small blue bird-like V motifs. The building features several window openings with inset mesh, a central projecting bay with a hexagonal roof, and decorative matchstick balconies.

A yellow rectangular adhesive label is attached to one roof section of the building, reading 914. No maker’s marks, signatures, or branding are visible on either piece.

Condition report:

The models are in good overall condition. The vardo shows minor misalignment to one structural splint on the front hitch (photo 1). The painted panels remain bright with no significant flaking. The tavern building shows several instances of minor splintering and matchstick loss at the sharp corners and edges of the tiered roof gables (photo 1). There is light dust accumulation throughout the recessed areas of the matchstick construction.
