A set of four small atmospheric landscape paintings, executed in oil on board. Each work depicts a winter or late autumnal scene characterized by bare deciduous trees, misty horizons, and figures tending to flocks of sheep. The artist employs a soft, hazy technique with a palette of muted greys, pale blues, and soft pinks to suggest twilight or dawn light filtering through a cold atmosphere. The brushwork is impressionistic, focusing on light and aerial perspective rather than fine detail. The paintings are housed in matching decorative gilt-wood frames, featuring a central bead-course flanked by molded floral and foliate scrollwork. No signatures, dates, or inscriptions are visible on the front of the boards. An orange rectangular adhesive label is present on the right-hand vertical rail of the frame in the upper right position, and a white rectangular adhesive label is located on the left-hand vertical rail of the frame in the lower left position; neither label bears legible maker or artist information.
Condition report:
The paintings show surface dirt and a light layer of yellowed varnish consistent with age (photo 1). The board in the lower left frame shows minor surface abrasions to the sky area. The frames exhibit general wear to the gilding. The lower left frame has a small loss to the gilt finish on the bottom edge (photo 1). The lower right frame has a significant chip and loss to the molded gesso decoration on the left vertical rail, exposing the underlying material (photo 1). Small chips and dust accumulation are visible in the recesses of the molded decoration across all four frames.
