A free-standing cheval mirror, or dressing mirror, constructed from pine. The rectangular mirror plate is set within a wooden frame and mounted on two turned uprights. These uprights are topped with decorative ball finials and feature adjustable wooden swivel bolts that allow the mirror to tilt. The frame is supported by a trestle base consisting of two shaped feet connected by three turned stretchers. The wood displays a natural light-toned finish with visible grain and knots throughout the construction. There are no maker’s marks, signatures, or labels visible on the piece.
Condition report:
The mirror plate is clear and shows no signs of foxing or silvering loss (photo 1). The wooden frame and stand exhibit general light surface wear and minor scuffing consistent with age and use. A small piece of pink fabric or plastic is caught around the left-hand swivel bolt (photo 1). The tilting mechanism appears functional and the trestle base is stable.
