Lot 264: A Collection of Framed Silver Gelatin Prints Depicting Historical Scenes of Bowness-on-Windermere
An assortment of approximately twelve black and white silver gelatin prints, each presented in matching glazed wooden frames with a dark brown and gilt-edged finish and black mats. The photographs document various historical street scenes and topographical views of Bowness-on-Windermere in the Lake District. The visible images feature period architecture, figures in late Victorian and Edwardian dress, and views of the town’s promenade. One print features a handwritten inscription in the lower right margin in a copperplate-style hand reading Promenade – Bowness. The prints are framed behind glass with deep-profile wooden mouldings.
Condition report:
The collection appears to be in good used condition. The prints exhibit a good tonal range throughout (photo 1). Some prints show evidence of minor silver mirroring at the edges of the darker photographic areas, consistent with the age of silver gelatin processes. The wooden frames show light surface scuffs, minor abrasions to the gilt inner lips, and an accumulation of surface dust from storage (photo 1). The glazing is intact across the visible collection.
