Lot 138: Large 19th Century English Riveted Copper Planter

Live auction will start in __ days and __ hours

Start price: £2

Buyer's Premium:

A large nineteenth-century cylindrical vessel constructed from heavy-gauge copper sheets. The body is formed from a single large sheet joined with a vertical row of hand-beaten copper rivets. A circular copper base is secured to the walls with a matching continuous line of large-headed copper rivets. The upper rim is reinforced with a thick, flat-top copper band. There are no clearly legible maker marks or hallmarks; however, faint incised characters are present near the interior rim (photo 1) which are too worn and blurred to be transcribed. The vessel features a heavy verdigris patina to the exterior and a darkened, aged finish to the interior. An orange adhesive price or inventory label is present on the exterior rim (photo 1).

Condition report:

The vessel shows signs of significant age and industrial or outdoor use. The exterior surface displays an uneven verdigris and dark brown oxidation with widespread mineral deposits and white spotting (photo 1). There are numerous scuffs, scratches, and small indentations to both the interior and exterior surfaces consistent with heavy-duty handling. The riveted construction remains structurally sound. No dimensions or weight can be provided as no scale is present in the photographs.
