This lot consists of two brass items of differing styles and origins. The first is a large circular decorative tray or charger, possibly of Middle Eastern or North African origin. It features extensive hand-chased and repoussé decoration throughout the central well and rim. The central design displays swirling foliate and floral motifs, which are enclosed by concentric bands of geometric patterns including zig-zags and repeating triangles. The second item is a wall-mounted box, typically used for storing matches or spills. It is constructed from sheet brass with a hinged lid and a decorative backplate featuring a scalloped silhouette and a central hanging hole. A white rectangular adhesive label bearing the number 25 is present on the tray (photo 2) and the wall-mounted box (photo 3). A small orange price or inventory sticker with handwritten digits is also visible on the backplate of the wall box (photo 3). No maker’s marks, stamps, or signatures were found on either item.
Condition report:
Both items exhibit surface oxidation and patina consistent with age and use. The circular tray shows darkening and minor verdigris within the recessed areas of the chased decoration (photo 2). There are scattered surface scuffs and minor scratches across the polished surfaces. The wall-mounted box has a duller overall patina than the tray, with more significant oxidation and darkening visible to the interior surfaces (photo 3). The hinges are intact and functional, though there are minor dings and surface wear to the edges and corners of the box.
