A collection of brass items comprising decorative vessels and commercial weighing components. Included are two circular brass trays: a larger tray with a crimped rim and a centre field chased with scrolling foliate and geometric motifs, and a smaller tray with similar engraved decoration. The lot contains a baluster-form ewer featuring chased floral and diaper-pattern decoration, and a wide-mouthed vessel with a flared rim.
The assembly includes a set of brass nesting graduated weights. The largest weight is housed under a bell-shaped cover. One handle-style weight top is impressed with the characters 9 1, 2, and B. Another handle is impressed with 4 and B. The side of the tallest weight handle is stamped with the maker name AVERY. Also present are two sections of turned brass pedestal stands or candlesticks, and a small circular brass dish containing a curved handle or ring fragment. The engraved items exhibit a style characteristic of Middle Eastern metalwork.
Condition report:
The collection shows evidence of significant age and use throughout. The flared vessel on the left tray has sustained a large, jagged dent and severe deformation to the rim (photo 1). The chased ewer and both trays exhibit surface oxidation and general tarnish. The larger tray shows multiple surface scratches across the engraved field (photo 1). The cast brass nesting weights and pedestal sections show heavy surface pitting, dark oxidation, and scattered verdigris (photo 1). The Avery weight set appears largely complete but shows wear to the impressed markings.
