Lot 520: Mid-20th Century Hand-Painted Wooden Sheet Music or Record Cabinet
A mid-20th century wooden storage cabinet designed for sheet music or vinyl records. The piece features an oval top above a body with a shaped apron, supported by four short cabriole legs. The interior is divided by two vertical panels, each fitted with ten horizontal rails creating narrow storage slots. The cabinet is finished in a muted sage green ground, decorated with hand-painted floral motifs. The centre of the top features a bouquet of pink roses and yellow blossoms, framed by scrolling foliate and vine borders in brown and green tones. Similar vine patterns are repeated on the curved side panels. No maker’s marks, signatures, or stamps are visible on the exterior surfaces. A white rectangular adhesive label is attached to the top left edge reading L L 7. An orange rectangular adhesive label is attached to the top right reading 520.
Condition report:
The cabinet shows signs of wear consistent with age and use. There is widespread fine crazing and cracking across the painted surface, most prominent on the top (photo 2). Various scuffs, small chips, and minor paint losses are visible along the edges, corners, and feet (photo 1). The interior slots show an accumulation of dust and cobwebs (photo 1). The structure appears stable.
