Lot 398: An Aubusson Style Floral Wool Rug
A hand-tufted or hand-knotted wool rug featuring a floral Aubusson design. The rug is constructed with a thick pile and a central oval medallion on a cream ground, containing blossoms and foliage in rose, blue, and sage green. The medallion is set within a solid dusty rose field. A scrolling floral and foliate border on a cream ground frames the rug, mirroring the palette and motifs of the central design. The rug is finished with a white cotton fringe at each end. No maker’s marks, labels, or signatures are visible.
Condition report:
The rug shows visible signs of age and wear. A prominent dark stain is located in the rose field just below the central medallion (photo 1). There is general surface soiling, most noticeable in the cream-coloured medallion and border (photo 1). The wool pile remains thick but shows areas of light surface wear. The white cotton fringe is intact across both ends but shows tangling and minor discoloration (photo 1).
