A pair of academic portrait drawings executed in sanguine chalk on toned wove paper. The works comprise head-and-shoulder studies, one depicting a man in three-quarter view and the other a woman in a near-frontal pose, with particular detail given to her curled hair. The drawings are presented in matching dark wood-effect frames with gilded inner slips and white mounts. The portrait of the man is signed and inscribed in cursive in the lower right S. Bunčić / Dubrovnik. The portrait of the woman is signed, dated, and inscribed in cursive in the centre-right S Bunčić 85 / Dubrovnik. Both items bear orange adhesive labels reading 233, and the man’s portrait has an additional white adhesive label reading 7.
Condition report:
The paper for both drawings shows light overall toning consistent with age (photos 2 and 3). There is minor rippling or undulation to the paper sheets within the mounts (photos 2 and 3). The frames show minor surface wear to the edges and corners (photo 1). Surface dust and reflections are visible on the glazing (photos 1, 2, and 3).
