Lot 150: A set of six Queen Anne style mahogany and walnut veneered dining chairs with needlepoint seats
A set of six dining chairs in the Queen Anne style, featuring mahogany frames with figured walnut veneers. Each chair is designed with a shaped top rail over a vase-form back splat showing burr wood grain. The drop-in seats are finished with hand-worked wool needlepoint upholstery, each depicting a unique floral motif against a pale green ground. The chairs are raised on cabriole front legs with shell carving at the knees and ball-and-claw feet, with square-section outswept legs to the rear. There are small adhesive labels present: a white circular sticker printed with the number 24 and an orange rectangular sticker printed with the number 150. No maker’s name, brand, or signature is visible on the timber or the upholstery.
Condition report:
The chairs show signs of age and regular use. There are scattered scuffs, abrasions, and small indentations to the wooden frames, mostly visible on the lower legs and feet (photo 1). The needlepoint seats appear to be in good order without any visible holes or unravelling, though there is light surface soiling and minor fading typical of vintage upholstery (photo 1). The frames and joinery appear stable.
