Lot 82: A collection of domestic brass and copper metalware including handbells, candlesticks, and chased jars
A diverse assortment of domestic metalware, predominantly composed of brass and copper items. The collection includes two cylindrical copper jars with domed covers and central finials, featuring bodies and lids decorated with chased and embossed geometric and scrolling foliate motifs. Brassware within the lot consists of several handbells in various sizes, some with turned brass handles and one with a black-painted wooden handle. There is a pair of brass candlesticks with turned baluster stems and stepped circular bases, a smaller chamberstick-style holder, and a brass ornament formed as a shoe. Also included are a pierced and scalloped brass tray, a long decorative brass bracket, and a brass vessel featuring a bird-shaped finial on its lid. The lot further contains a miniature cast white metal model of a field cannon with spoked wheels and a small cast white metal figure of a man in traditional costume mounted on a dark card backing. A white adhesive label in the top right corner of the box is marked 4 4 and an orange adhesive label on the side is marked 82. No maker’s marks, signatures, or hallmarks are legible on the exterior surfaces of these items.
Condition report:
The collection shows signs of age-related wear across all items. A heavy patina and surface tarnish are visible on most brass and copper surfaces, with accumulated dust in the recessed areas of the turned and chased decoration. Minor surface scratches are present, and small spots of green oxidation are visible, particularly on the copper jars and the bases of the candlesticks.
