Lot 581: A Victorian Style Four Tier Hardwood Corner Whatnot
A corner-standing shelving unit, known as a whatnot, constructed from dark-stained hardwood. The piece is designed to fit flush into a corner and features four graduated triangular shelves with rounded front edges. The structure is supported by spindle-turned columns, with the uppermost tier finished with three turned finials. The item is photographed in a horizontal position against a white-painted brick wall. Two small orange rectangular adhesive labels are present on the upper shelves, though neither bears legible text or maker identification.
Condition report:
The piece exhibits surface wear consistent with age and use. There are visible surface scratches and abrasions to the polished finish across all shelf surfaces (photo 1). The edges show significant wear and finish loss, particularly evident on the lower tiers (photo 1). Minor scuffing is visible on the turned supports and finials (photo 1).
