Lot 469: A Collection of Vintage Books including Carroll, Lewis. Alice in Wonderland. Illustrated by Harry Rountree.
A collection of vintage books, featuring a hardcover edition of Alice in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll. The volume is bound in tan cloth and features a pictorial paste-down to the front board depicting the Mad Hatter’s tea party. The illustration bears the printed signature Harry Rountree in the lower right corner and is titled ALICE IN WONDERLAND by LEWIS CARROLL, specifying Colour Illustrations by HARRY ROUNTREE. Also included in the collection is a Corgi Books paperback edition of Defeat into Victory: Marshal Slim’s Burma War. A grey cloth-bound volume is present with Hitler and HEIDEN printed on the spine. The lot further contains a red cloth book decorated with a black silhouette of a dog, a volume with the spine title THE TYRANTS, and fragments of a periodical displaying the text STRATED EW…, likely The Illustrated London News.
Condition report:
The Alice in Wonderland volume shows significant wear, including heavy scuffing and substantial material loss to the front pictorial paste-down, particularly at the top edge (photo 1). The corners are severely bumped and frayed, exposing the underlying boards (photo 1). The Corgi paperback edition of Defeat into Victory exhibits spine creasing and edge wear (photo 1). The Hitler volume shows soiling to the cloth and fading to the spine lettering (photo 1). The remaining volumes demonstrate various degrees of shelf wear, edge toning, and soiling to the bindings consistent with age and storage.
