Lot 46: A Cased Set of Six Silver-Plated Teaspoons and a Pair of Sugar Tongs
A set of six teaspoons and one pair of sugar tongs, presented in a fitted case. The teaspoons are made of silver-plated nickel silver and feature bright-cut engraved handles decorated with floral and foliate motifs. The matching sugar tongs are of a plain, bow-ended form without engraving. The pieces bear impressed marks on the reverse of the stems, comprising the letters E and P, followed by a shield-shaped cartouche containing an indistinct device, and the letters N and S. The maker mark within the shield is not legible. The items are housed in a black textured case with a blue velvet base and a white satin lid lining. Two adhesive labels are attached to the interior lid lining: a rectangular orange label reading 47 and a white label reading 7 7.
Condition report:
The metalware exhibits moderate to heavy surface tarnish throughout and shows minor surface scratches consistent with light use (photo 1). The case shows significant wear, with scuffing visible to the exterior corners and edges. The interior white satin lid lining is heavily affected by yellow and brown staining and discolouration (photo 1). The blue velvet base shows minor dust and light compression marks from the flatware.
