A Chinese area rug featuring a hand-carved floral design in the French Aubusson style. The rug is constructed with a thick wool pile on a cotton foundation. A distinctive feature is the sculpted or hand-carved pile, where the wool has been trimmed around the pattern outlines to create a three-dimensional embossed effect. The design comprises a large central floral medallion with a rose motif set against a sage green field. This field is enclosed by an ornate border composed of scrolling acanthus leaves and floral sprays in a palette of cream, dusty rose, and taupe. No maker’s marks, labels, or signatures are visible on the section shown.
Condition report:
The rug shows visible signs of wear and storage. Noticeable surface soiling and several darkened stained areas are present, particularly within the cream-coloured floral motifs and borders (photo 1). The pile appears generally intact with no visible holes or fraying at the edges in the depicted portion.
