Lot 274: Anonymous. Famous Pictures of the World. [Publisher Unknown], [Circa 1900]. A Collection of Volumes.
A collection of softcover art folios titled Famous Pictures of the World, described on the covers as being complete in six parts. The volumes are bound in magenta-coloured paper wrappers with titles and series information printed in black. The interior of the folios contains colour plate reproductions of notable artworks printed on off-white paper. One visible plate depicts The Avenue at Middelharnis by Meindert Hobbema. Positioned above this image is a printed caption, oriented upside down, referencing Frigidarium. From the Painting by Lord Leighton. The booklets are constructed with simple string bindings through the spine. No publisher, author, or date of publication is legible on the visible surfaces of the collection.
Condition report:
The magenta paper wrappers exhibit fading, edge wear, and small chips and tears along the margins (photo 1). Some covers show minor creasing and light surface soiling. The internal pages and the margins surrounding the plates display moderate foxing and brown spotting (photo 1). The string bindings are present and functional, though they show age-related wear and slight loosening.
