Lot 273: Three British Illustrated War Periodicals Including Black and White Budget and The Great War
This lot consists of three early 20th-century British illustrated periodicals focusing on contemporary military history. The first publication is titled The Great War: The Standard History of the World-Wide Conflict, Part 165, dated October 13th, 1917. This issue was edited by H. W. Wilson and features a cover portrait of Temp. Surgeon-General Humphry Davy Rolleston, C.B., M.D., F.R.C.P., with the photograph credited to Elliott and Fry. The cover also notes the inclusion of the article Lower Deck Life in War Time by Percival A. Hislam and is priced at 7d. Net. The second publication is Black and White Budget: News of the Wars and News of the Week, Vol. III, No. 46, dated August 25, 1900. It features a cover portrait of Major-General Archibald Graham Wavell, credited to Elliott and Fry, and contains thirty-two pages of illustrated news priced at 2d. The third publication is Black and White Budget: War, and the Week’s News, Vol. III, No. 37, dated June 23, 1900. The cover depicts Major-General J. Talbot Coke and notes thirty-two pages of illustrations priced at 2d. All periodicals are staple-bound in paper wraps. A yellow adhesive tag reading 12 / 274 is present in the top left, a small orange adhesive label reading 273 is attached to the third periodical, and a pink paper sheet marked PART II is visible behind the first issue. The lot is bundled with white twine.
Condition report:
All items are in fair condition for ephemeral paper goods of their age (photo 1). The issues exhibit advanced age-toning and significant foxing throughout the covers (photo 1). Edge wear is prevalent, with fraying and chipping to the paper margins, notably on the Black and White Budget issues (photo 1). The third issue shows heavy creasing to the lower-left corner (photo 1). The white twine used to bundle the lot has caused slight indentations to the paper edges (photo 1).
