Lot 241: A Pair of Chinese Framed Silk Embroideries signed Una
A pair of framed silk embroideries executed in fine satin stitch on a celadon-green silk ground. The upper panel depicts a songbird with blue and white plumage perched on a flowering branch beside large, vibrant blue peonies and stylized rockwork. The lower panel features a long-tailed bird, likely a pheasant or phoenix, with blue, purple, and green plumage amidst pale pink and white peonies, with a butterfly in the lower left and stylized rockwork to the right. Both panels are signed in the upper right corner with the handwritten name Una in dark ink. The lower panel also contains small, dark, illegible marks in the bottom right corner that appear to be Chinese characters. The embroideries are housed in ornate gilt-wood frames with scrolling foliate and floral patterns under glass. The right edge of the lower frame bears two adhesive auction labels: an orange sticker reading 241 and a white sticker reading 21.
Condition report:
The silk ground shows light, even toning and minor rippling consistent with age (photo 1). The embroidery remains intact with no visible tears, holes, or significant staining. The ornate gilt frames show light surface wear and minor scuffing to the finish, particularly at the corners and edges (photo 1).
