Lot 180: T. Leslie Hawkes 'Early morning market Ulverston' (Signed)
A framed print on paper depicting a bustling street market scene in the town of Ulverston, Cumbria. The composition is centred around a market cross monument, surrounded by historic buildings and a prominent flower stall in the foreground with various figures. The work is executed in a muted palette of blues and greens. The print bears a signature in the lower right corner consisting of a horizontal flourish followed by the characters T. Leslie Hawkes. The cream-coloured mat is hand-signed in pencil at the lower left with a horizontal flourish followed by T. Leslie Hawkes. A pencil inscription in the lower right of the mat reads Early morning market Ulverston. The piece is housed behind glass in a dark wood frame featuring a gilt inner edge.
Condition report:
The paper support shows significant orange-brown mat burn and acid-related discoloration concentrated around the inner edges of the mat window (photo 1). Notable foxing is visible across the surface of the paper, particularly in the upper sky region and towards the edges (photo 1). The mat exhibits overall age-related toning. The frame appears structurally sound with minor surface wear consistent with age.
