Lot 174: A Pair of Hand-Coloured Engraved Maps of Yorkshire
A pair of framed and glazed hand-coloured copperplate engravings on paper, comprising two regional maps of Yorkshire from the 17th and 18th centuries. The first print, positioned on the left, is a regional topographical map inscribed at the top margin DVNELMENSIS EPISCOPATVS PARS and featuring a decorative strapwork cartouche to the upper right inscribed YORK Shire. A mileage scale to the lower right is titled Milliaria Anglica with intervals marked 5, 10, and 15 miles. The number 58 is engraved in the bottom right corner of the plate. The second print, positioned on the right, features a composite layout with a road strip map at the top within a decorative foliate cartouche inscribed The Road from CARLISLE to BARWICK. A distance table below lists stages including Brakenhill, Jedboro, Kelso, and Cornhill. The lower portion of the sheet contains a regional map inscribed The NORTH & EAST RIDING of YORKSHIRE. A descriptive text block at the base begins The County of YORK is divided into 3 Parts… and refers to page 165. The number 160 is printed in the top left corner. Both prints exhibit clear plate marks and are presented in matching light wood-finished frames. A white adhesive label reading 7 is attached to the bottom right of both frames (photo 1). A fluorescent orange adhesive label reading 174 is attached to the bottom left corner of the right frame (photo 2).
Condition report:
Both prints exhibit significant overall toning and yellowing of the paper (photo 1). Moderate scattered foxing is visible across both sheets (photos 2 and 3). There is minor undulation and light creasing to the paper visible beneath the glass (photo 3). The wooden frames show light surface wear and minor scuffing to the edges (photo 1).
