Lot 173: A Collection of Vintage Golf Balls in a Penfold Patented Box
An assortment of vintage golf balls contained within an original hinged yellow and red cardboard box. The lid features the printed text PENFOLD PATENTED GOLF BALLS in black and red, accompanied by an illustration of a golf ball stamped PENFOLD and a flag showing card suits. The interior base of the box bears a circular printed logo with a cross-section of a golf ball and the words PENFOLD PATENTED. The collection includes three foil-wrapped balls: one in red foil with a white label marked with the number 4, one in dark blue foil, and one in black foil with a gold, red, and black label reading DUNLOP 65. Also included is a heavily browned, aged golf ball and several white dimpled balls. The white balls bear various red markings, including the name PENFOLD and the letters G B D above N O N. The box also carries a white adhesive sticker with the number 7 on the exterior lid and an orange adhesive sticker with the handwritten number 173 on the interior side.
Condition report:
The cardboard box shows moderate shelf wear, including scuffing to the edges and bumping to the corners. There are light surface stains and small losses to the printed design (photo 1). The foil-wrapped balls show minor creasing to the wrappers but remain intact. The unwrapped white balls exhibit varying degrees of surface dirt, scuffing, and discolouration, with one ball being significantly browned (photo 1).
