Lot 111: A Collection of Royal Doulton Brambly Hedge and Portmeirion Botanic Garden Ceramic Plates
A collection of four British decorative ceramic plates comprising three items from the Royal Doulton Brambly Hedge series and one Portmeirion Botanic Garden plate. The three Royal Doulton plates are constructed from fine bone china and feature scalloped rims. They are decorated with multi-coloured transfer-printed illustrations after original artwork by Jill Barklem, depicting narrative scenes of mice within their homes, framed by dense borders of seasonal flora and fruit. The first plate, titled The Dairy, features a central scene of a mouse in a bedroom and bears a printed backstamp within a floral wreath reading Royal Doulton THE DAIRY The Home of Poppy Eyebright followed by a series description and narrative text regarding Poppy dressing for her wedding day, signed Jill Barklem and dated 1983. The second plate, Crabapple Cottage, depicts mice stringing crabapples and bears a printed backstamp within a floral wreath reading Royal Doulton CRABAPPLE COTTAGE The Home of Mr. and Mrs. Apple with narrative text, the Jill Barklem signature, and a 1983 copyright date. The third plate, Old Oak Palace, shows a mouse in a four-poster bed and bears a printed backstamp within a floral wreath reading Royal Doulton OLD OAK PALACE The Home of Lord and Lady Woodmouse with narrative text, the Jill Barklem signature, and a 1984 copyright date. The Portmeirion plate is made of glazed earthenware with a plain rim and features a transfer-printed botanical illustration from the Botanic Garden series. The central motif depicts a Slender Columbine with butterflies, framed by the pattern signature laurel leaf border. Printed text on the front reads AQUILEGIA GRACILIS Slender Columbine. The reverse bears a printed black backstamp reading THE BOTANIC GARDEN circ. 1818 PORTMEIRION 1972 DISHWASHER PROOF OVEN TO TABLE MICROWAVE & FREEZER SAFE MADE IN ENGLAND. Three plates have orange adhesive price stickers affixed to their decorative surfaces.
Condition report:
The plates appear to be in good condition with no visible chips, cracks, or professional repairs evident in the provided images (photo 1, photo 2). Orange adhesive price stickers are affixed to the front surfaces of the Crabapple Cottage plate, the Old Oak Palace plate, and the Portmeirion plate (photo 1). No significant wear to the transfer-printed decoration or glaze is observed.
