Lot 73: A Set of Libra Scale Co. Vintage Cast Iron and Brass Balance Scales with Weights
This set of vintage balance scales was manufactured by the Libra Scale Co. in England. The assembly comprises a heavy cast iron balance mechanism with a black painted finish, two removable brass pans, and a separate black stand containing a set of seven nested brass weights. The brass components include one large pouring scoop designed for the left side and a smaller, flat circular pan for the right side. The cast iron base features the embossed lettering LIBRA SCALE CO. on the left side and ENGLAND on the right, with a central oval plaque bearing the maker name Libra in cursive script. The cylindrical brass weights have their denominations incised on the top surfaces, including 100g and 50g.
Condition report:
The scales are in good vintage condition with evidence of age and use. The brass pans and weights show surface tarnish, oxidation spots, and minor pitting throughout. An orange adhesive price sticker is present inside the brass scoop. The black finish on the cast iron base exhibits minor scuffing and small areas of paint loss, most notably along the raised edges and feet. A small white label marked 22 is affixed to the front of the base. The mechanical balance appears complete and functional, although it has not been calibrated for accuracy.
