Lot 657: Asian Camphor Wood Campaign Style Blanket Chest
An Asian export campaign style blanket chest, likely constructed from camphor wood. The rectangular case features a flat, hinged lid with three flush-mounted brass hinges. The exterior displays a rich, active wood grain with a warm reddish-brown finish. To each end is a heavy, cast-metal drop handle with a rectangular backplate, characteristic of campaign or travel furniture. These chests were traditionally used for storing textiles due to the wood’s natural aromatic and insect-repellent properties. Two stickers are present on the upper right corner of the lid, one being a white inventory sticker bearing the numbers 1212.
Condition report:
The chest exhibits surface wear consistent with age and use. The lid and sides show various scratches, scuffs, and areas of finish wear. There is minor chipping and rubbing along the corners and edges. The metal handles and hinges have a dark aged patina with some oxidation visible on the hinges.
