Lot 195: Cassells, A Trio of Signed Oil Paintings in Ornate Gilt Frames
A trio of oil paintings on canvas board by the artist Cassells, consisting of two vertical landscapes and one horizontal maritime scene. The landscapes are rendered in a traditional repoussoir style, with prominent textured trees on the periphery framing central subjects: a stone packhorse bridge in one and a white-walled building in the other. The maritime painting depicts a multi-masted seventeenth-century style galleon at anchor near a rocky coastline, where figures in period costume are shown unloading barrels onto a sandy beach. The brushwork is decorative, featuring notable impasto used for foliage and highlights. Each work is signed Cassells in a simple white script; signatures are located at the top right of the bridge landscape, and the bottom right of both the building landscape and maritime scene. The paintings are housed in matching ornate gilt composite frames with scrolling foliate corner and centre ornaments, finished with off-white linen slips. Each frame bears a small white rectangular sticker with the number 14 and an orange price label marked 195/-.
Condition report:
The paintings are in good overall condition. There is a visible horizontal surface scuff in the sky of the maritime scene, approximately 15cm in length. Minor surface dirt is present on all three works. The frames show some light wear to the gilt finish but are structurally sound. No significant paint loss or craquelure is noted.
